Today, 12 October 2009, read your piece on the ranchers and the Indians in Sta Cruz (Bolivia). Don’t know when it was published. Very interesting, but for a PhD candidate, you’re not offering hard facts. I’m sure the Indians work for low wages as most Bolivians do, and the working conditions are far from ideal, still…your piece reads more like a “propaganda” piece rather than something I would write as an anthropologist or a researcher. One thing that bothered me is that i could not find your name…perhaps it’s hidden somewhere. Regardless, I hope i get to read more about Bolivia and the conditions of its working poor, but please NO PROPAGANDA. I have family there and visit frequently and I hear their versions of what is happening to the country under its current administration. It’s not pretty, and answers seem hard to find, especially when they are clouded by politics. Bolivia has very, very serious problems and won’t be solved by anyone currently in power. Indeed, Mr Morales and his colleagues seem to be part of the problem. Thanks. I hope to hear from you.
Thank you for your comment.
I am sorry you were bothered by not finding my name anywhere (it’s not hidden far from view; I link to some articles written under it). Pseudonymity is a well-established tradition in blogging, however, and I find it useful. Only a small minority of bloggers use their real names, and I choose not to be among them.
I am a little confused that you apparently don’t consider published reports by the Organisation of American States and the UN Special Rapporteur for Human Rights ‘hard facts’. I also find your dismissal of the human rights situation on the haciendas of the east rather callous. I’m not an unconditional Morales cheerleader: you will find posts here where I have criticised where I feel criticism is due.
All in all, while I appreciate the measured tone of your comment, I’m rather disinclined to be told what, how and under what name I should write in my own blog.
